Frequencies of Belonging

A site-specific audiovisual installation exploring the emotional landscape of belonging through voice, light, and data-driven sound.

Frequencies of Belonging is a site-specific generative installation merging emotional data, voice archives, and real-time audiovisual technology to explore the elusive, intimate, and deeply personal concept of “home.”

Premiered on April 11th, 2025, in Genoa (Italy), the installation takes over the top of the Torre Piacentini, the tallest building in the city, as part of NexusProjects, a public art programme curated to activate architectural landmarks through digital media and technology.

Visible each evening from April 11th to May 12th, the work transforms the city’s skyline into a living soundscape of shared memories. It unfolds across two integrated layers:
— a 128 m² (1,377.78 Square Feet) LED wall atop the historic Terrazza Colombo, overlooking Genoa's port and sea
— an immersive room made of 19 screens, responsive to the voices of people

The Concept

What defines a home? A person? A sound? A moment of stillness? Frequencies of Belonging was born from the desire to explore what “belonging” really means—beyond geography, beyond architecture. The project began with an open call, launched via Tiziana’s Instagram, inviting people to respond to a single question using their voice: “What does home mean to you?”

Over 100 people shared their answers. The recordings were treated not as raw material, but as human data—sonic traces of identity, memory, absence, and presence. These intimate voice notes became the core data source for the artwork.

The Process

Each voice was mapped into a set of sonic parameters—frequency, amplitude, rhythm, breath, and silence. These were then sonified and visualised using a custom-built audio-reactive system developed in TouchDesigner.

Rather than pre-rendered animation, the installation is fully generative and real-time, producing ever-evolving visual forms directly shaped by the nuance and emotion embedded in each voice. The visual language of the piece—soft, fluid, non-linear—echoes the complexity of the human condition. It doesn’t aim to simplify. It listens. It holds. It reflects.

In this way, Frequencies of Belonging becomes a living archive, where data is not reduced to numbers, but expanded into presence.

The Rooftop 128 m² LED wall

Located atop Torre Piacentini, Frequencies of Belonging is visible from across the city—an audiovisual signal glowing from the skyline at dusk. The installation reclaims a corporate LED billboard, a massive 128 m² (1,377.78 Square Feet) LED wall, transforming it into a poetic surface for collective storytelling.

As described by Artribune, the project is “a sensory mapping of the complexities of contemporary belonging”—a public artwork that blends digital aesthetics, emotional data, and the architecture of memory.

The site becomes more than a viewing platform: it turns into a stage for voices that often remain invisible. The city itself becomes the medium.

The Immersive room

On the 30th floor of the tower, the experience deepens: a dedicated immersive room hosts a live-streamed version of the installation. Inside, 19 synchronised screens and a multi-channel spatial sound system surround the viewer, offering an intimate, full-sensory experience of the artwork. While the city watches the sky, here the public is invited into the core of the piece, where sound, voice, and light weave together in real time. This enclosed, contemplative environment acts as a counterpoint to the openness of the skyline, allowing for a slower, more introspective encounter with the data and stories at the heart of the work.

Press Coverage

The installation has been featured in several cultural and art media outlets:

  • Sky Arte called it “a collective act of listening, translating voice into light.”

  • Artribune described it as “a layered, deeply reflective meditation on the notion of home.”

What’s Next

Frequencies of Belonging is conceived as a generative and site-adaptive project, with future iterations already in development. Each new location will include a new open call, new voices, and new sonic cartographies of belonging.

The journey continues—one voice at a time.

Frequencies of Belonging was made possible through a deeply collaborative process involving artists, engineers, cultural producers, and technicians.
